C
I was
on the outskirts of
a little southern town,
trying to reach my destination
F
before the sun went down.
C
The old CD was blared away
on Channel 1 -9
when there came a little boy's voice
he said breaker one night is anyone
C
there come on back truckers
and talk to teddy bear well
F
I keep the mic and I said
you got it teddy bear
C
and the little boys voices
C
appreciate the break who we got on that end
G
C
I told him my handling
and he began now
I'm not supposed to bother
Mom says you're busy
C
for me to stay off the air.
But you see,
G
I get lonely and it helps to talk,
because that's about all I can do.
C
I'm crippled and I can't walk.
F
I came back and told him to
fire up that mic
C
and I'd talk to him as long as he liked.
G
This is my daddy's radio,
the little boy said,
C
G
but I guess it's mine and mom's now
C
G
C
because my daddy's dead.
Dad had a wreck about a month ago.
F
He was trying to get home
in the blinding snow.
and make ends meet.
I'm not much help
G
with my two crippled feet.
She says not to worry,
But I hear her crying
C
you know there's one thing
G
I want more than anything else to see
C
and no you you guys are too busy
to bother with me
but you see my dad
he used to take me for rides
I guess that's all over now
C
G
since my daddy's gone
C
Not one breaker came on the old CB
G
as that little crippled boy talked with me.
C
I tried to swallow a lump,
but it just wouldn't stay down,
F
as I thought about my boy
back in Greenville town.
C
Dad was going to take Mom
later on this year,
C
while I remember him saying
And someday this old truck
will be yours, Teddy Bear.
But I know I'll never get to ride
But this old bass will keep me in touch
C
G
with all my trucker friends.
C
Teddy Bear's gonna back on out now
because it's about time
But you give me a shout
when you're passing through,
F
and I'll sure be happy to
come back to you.
C
Well, I came back and said,
Before you go, Ten -Ten,
Well, he gave me his address.
G
C
I didn't once hesitate,
Cause this old hot load of freight
F
is just gonna have to wait.
I turned that old truck around on a dime,
C
And headed straight for Jackson Street,
229.
C
oh, I got one heck of a shock.
Eighteen wheelers were lined up
I guess every driver for miles around
C
had got a teddy bear's call.
G
C
That little crippled boy was having a ball.
For as fast as one driver
would carry him in,
another would carry him to his truck
and take off again.
I took my turn in ridin' little teddy bear
C
And then I carried him back in
and put him down in his chair
G
And buddy, if I never live
to see happiness again
I want you to know
in the face of that little man
F
C
We took a collection for him
C
G
Each driver said goodbye,
He shook my hand with a mile -long grin
and said,
So long, trucker.
Well, I hit that interstate
with tears in my eyes.
C
G
C
I turned on the radio
G
and I got another surprise.
C
Breaker 09 came a voice on the air.
Just one word of thanks
from Mama Teddy Bear.
F
We wish each and every one
a special prayer for you
C
Cause you just made my little
G
C
boy's dream come true
G
C
G
C
I'll sign off now before I start to cry
G
C
May God ride with you 10 -4
And goodbye
